Why Local?

Broadcast signals are geographically constrained to a radius of about 75 miles. Hence, broadcast licenses were granted to local communities by the FCC.

 

Early on broadcast stations evolved and became “commercial” because advertising became its principal source of income. Eventually educational radio emerged and it was supported by universities and local school boards.
