WLRN Listening Project

WLRN-TV began broadcasting in 1962 as Channel 17, operated by Miami-Dade County Public Schools to deliver instructional television to classrooms throughout the district.
Over time, the station expanded its mission to serve the broader South Florida community with PBS programming, documentaries, and locally produced public affairs shows. WLRN-TV is known for its in-depth local reporting, cultural series, and support for independent film. Today, it continues to offer PBS and locally focused content, reflecting the region’s diversity and interests.
WLRN-FM, launched in 1948, is one of Florida’s oldest public radio stations. Initially created to support educational programming, the station transitioned into a full-service NPR member station, broadcasting on 91.3 FM. Known for its award-winning local journalism and commitment to civic dialogue, WLRN-FM provides South Florida with national and international news, in-depth local reporting, and a rich mix of arts and cultural programming.
Both stations are operated by Friends of WLRN, a nonprofit organization, in partnership with the Miami-Dade County School Board. Together, WLRN-TV and WLRN-FM continue their long-standing mission to inform, educate, and inspire the South Florida community.
